The San Marcos Historical Society will host this year’s production of “Mr. Scrooge & Mr. Dickens.” The play is a faithful adaptation of Charles Dickens’ beloved holiday classic “A Christmas Carol” with a fascinating new embellishment: Dickens himself appears onstage to read sections from the work — primarily passages describing the people and places of Victorian England, an aspect generally lost in adaptations of “A Christmas Carol.” The production is further enhanced by carolers, dancers, computer-controlled lighting, music, and powerful sound effects. There will also be a surprise visit by Santa at the end of the show.

“Mr. Scrooge & Mr. Dickens” has been performed annually to sell-out audiences throughout So Cal. 100% of this year’s ticket sales (not just ‘proceeds’) will benefit the Historical Society.

“Mr. Scrooge & Mr. Dickens” is a production of Art Animates Life (artanimateslife.org or .com), a nonprofit group founded by creative professionals looking for ways to help nonprofit organizations struggling in difficult economic times, as-well-as promote live theater to the general public. Art Animates Life members do not receive monetary compensation for their time, talent, commissions, royalties, etc.

Past years’ shows have raised thousands of dollars for disaster relief in San Diego’s North County and staged the first ever live theater production for the Escondido Arts Partnership/Municipal Gallery.

“Mr. Scrooge & Mr. Dickens” has been performed the last several years to sell-out audiences to benefit several San Diego theater mainstays including Patio Playhouse and POWPac (Poway Performing Arts Company).

The San Marcos Historical Society was established in 1967 and incorporated in 1968. The Society was originally located on San Marcos Blvd until the end of 2009 when it was relocated to Heritage Park, nestled within Twin Oaks Valley.

The play will take place in picturesque Connors Hall, which was built in 1940 by the Works Projects Administration. The adjacent historic Cox and Bidwell houses were built in the late 1800’s creating a near perfect ambiance for the adaptation of “A Christmas Carol.”
